Laser Hair Removal

Have you ever tried laser hair removal in the past and found it didn’t work, or even noticed the hair growing back thicker? The truth is, there’s a science to achieving the right results. Factors such as hair colour, thickness, and skin type all play a crucial role in determining the correct treatment settings. Tiffany has been professionally trained through Victoria University in laser and light-based therapies, with specialised expertise in laser hair removal. With her in-depth understanding of laser science and skin, Tiffany ensures treatments are tailored to your individual needs to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Mechanism of Action - how does it work?

The laser peaks at both melanin and blood, meaning it is attracted to the melanin (colour) within the hair and absorbed within the hair shaft. Diffusion of the high temperatures takes place across separation between the melanin (colour) and hair shaft and biological targets to cause structural damage. Thermal coagulation and denaturation (breaking up of proteins) occurs and disruption to follicular tissue. Stem cells are destroyed in the heating process causing the hair to not regrow. Laser Hair Removal is not permanent and hair can regrow with changes in hormones over time. Talk to Tiffany about what treatment options are best suited for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser hair removal safe while pregnant or breastfeeding?

There is currently no research on this, and with good reason. No one has volunteered to do this study and  risk their unborn baby or newborn.  So, unfortunately no studies have been done. However, during this time increased hormone changes can actually increase hair growth. It is better to wait until hormones have balanced again where hair growth won't be encouraged and better results can be achieved.

Why do I have to shave before my treatment?

Since the laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair, we want the laser to be directed down into the follicle to reach the stem cells of the hair. If the hair isn't shaved the laser will just burn the top of the hair and not actually reach the desired area to damage the stem cells. Resulting in no treatment outcome.

Why is fake tan strictly prohibited?

Because the laser is attracted to colour, when the skin has surface colour the laser will attract straight to that colour. This could result in a surface burn on the skin and not allow the laser to hit its desired target within the skin.

What is a clinical end point and why is it needed?

A clinical end point is noted where signs of the laser treatment have occurred. Redness and light to mild follicle swelling is desired. This shows a histamine reaction in the skin and shows the laser has hit the target within the follicle. The right temperature has been reached and caused damage to the stem cells within the bottom of the hair shaft. Not reaching a clinical end point could be just warming the area and actually stimulate more hair growth.

Before & Aftercare

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective treatment that reduces unwanted hair and leaves skin feeling smoother for longer. To achieve the best results and keep your skin healthy, it’s important to follow the recommended before and aftercare instructions. These simple guidelines will help prepare your skin for treatment, support healing, and ensure long-lasting outcomes. Please follow the instructions below carefully.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

  • Avoid the sun 2-4 weeks before and after treatment. Epidermal melanocytes compete with melanin in the hair, attracting the laser to it.

  • Your Dermal Clinician may ask you to stop any topical medications or skincare products 3-5 days prior to treatment.

  • You MUST avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair while having laser treatments. The melanin-containing hair must be present in the follicle as it is the "target" for the laser light.

  • RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated within 2 weeks of active (natural sunlight or tanning booth) tanning, you may develop a laser burn or hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment and this may not clear for 2-3 months or more.

  • The use of self-tanning skin products must be discontinued two weeks before treatment. Any residual self-tanner should be removed prior to treatment.

  • Please avoid antihistamine medication before your treatment as this can stop a clinical end point.

Intra-Treatment Care

  • Please shave prior to treatment

  • The Zimmer (cryogen cooling device), will be used with the laser to cool the skin during treatment.

  • Safety considerations are important during the laser procedure.

  • Protective eye wear will be worn by the patient and all personnel in the treatment room during the procedure to avoid the chance of damage to the eye. In addition, your Dermal Clinician will take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Immediately after treatment, there should be a desired clinical end point of erythema (redness) and Oedema (swelling) or perifollicular oedema (follicle swelling) of each hair follicle in the treatment site, which may last up to 2 hours or longer. The erythema may last up to 2-3 days. The treated area may feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment.

  • Post laser gel containing aloe vera may be used as an optional cooling method after treatment to ensure your comfort.

  • makeup may be used immediately after the treatment, as long as the skin is not irritated.

  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation (darker spots) or burn from occurring.

  • Use a sunscreen (SPF30+) al all times throughout the course of treatment.

  • Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin. do not use any other hair removal treatment products or similar treatments (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) that will disturb the hair follicle in the treatment area after the laser treatment is performed. shaving is permitted.

  • Anywhere from 5-14 days after the treatment, shedding of the treated hair may occur and this appears as new hair growth. This is NOT new hair growth. You can clean and remove the hair by exfoliating the area.

  • There is no restrictions on bathing except to treat the skin gently, as if you had a sunburn, for the first 24hours. use warm water and avoid heat activities.

  • Appointments are performed every 4 weeks to start, as progress is made the appointments can be spaced out to accomodate hair growth.
